North Ayrshire Open 2015 Results

North Ayrshire Table Tennis Club held the 4th North Ayrshire Open at St Matthews Academy at the weekend which saw over 155 players from all over UK travel here to compete. There were 15 different categories for players to compete in, ranging from u11’s to over 55’s. We had 25 North Ayrshire players competing which saw some great results posted by the players. Andy Macpherson & Richard Main both reached the latter stages of the Mens Singles, with Andy reaching the last 16 & Richard losing out in the Quarter Finals to the top seed & eventual winner Chris Wheeler. Jill Taylor reached the last 16 of the Womens Singles where she lost out 3-0 to Holly Williams of Swerve TTC (Middlesbrough). Garnock Valleys TTC & St Matthews Academy pupil Rebecca Plaistow showed how much she has improved recently with reaching the final of the Women’s Singles & justified her top seed in Junior Girls winning that in dominate style too.

Martin & Jamie Johnson both won their respective events, Martin winning the u13 boys with a 3-
1 win over Rafael Wolowski (Aberdeen) in the final. Jamie beat Stanley Loi (Aberdeen) 3-0 in the u11’s final which made it a double win for the brothers from Stevenston. Martin reached the final of u15 boys with 2 solid wins over James Forrest & Zaid Khalid. Ryan Watt & Holly McNamara did brilliantly in their age categories, Holly reached the SF of U13 Girls & Ryan made his way to the SF of U11 Boys losing out to club mate Jamie Johnson. Ryan Henry, Robin Wilson & Derrin Lynch successfully qualified from their groups and into the knockout stages of Junior Boys event where they all lost out to top seeds.

The North Ayrshire Open is developing into one of the biggest & most prestigious table tennis events in Scotland & NATTC hope to build on that and keep making it bigger & better each year.

Thanks to all players who travelled and competed and as always, we welcome feedback on how we can make this competition better next year. The first few months of the 2015 – 2016 season have been the busiest North Ayrshire Table Tennis Club have seen since it was founded just over 10 years ago. We have more members & teams than ever, classes that run 5 nights per week & have ran a number of successful national & international events over the past couple of seasons.

North Ayrshire TTC are looking to increase our fundraising this season to help with the costs of these activities. We are asking everyone who would like to support our club to donate and get behind NATTC. This is to ensure that we can continue doing what we are doing and keep achieving locally & on the national stage.

For more and to donate please visit – http://gogetfunding.com/north-ayrshire-table-tennis-club/.

Chris Main – Interview with Expert TT

Chris Main was on episode 18 of the Expert Table Tennis Podcast where he was interviewed by Ben Larcombe to discuss & chat about North Ayrshire TTC and table tennis in general. It is a an interesting listen to anyone who has or is involved in table tennis and can be listened to here – www.experttabletennis.com/chris-main-bringing-international-tt-to-saltcoats/.

Ben Larcombe has been involved in several table tennis related things over the past year or so, he was the coach in “Guy Plays Table Tennis Every Day for a Year” which went viral and has over 1.5 million views (www.youtube.com/watch?v=4y21uwFUgkE) and is the driving force behind Eastfield Co which is a brand new table tennis company with rubbers, blades and batcases being released very soon. www.eastfieldco.com.

Excerpt from Expert Table Tennis website
Chris Main is the head coach of North Ayrshire Table Tennis Club, a thriving club located on the West Coast of Scotland in Saltcoats. Saltcoats is a small town about 45 minutes away from Glasgow but Chris is on a mission to transform it into a hub of table tennis activity.

The club has won the Scottish National League four years in a row, is home to a number of top junior and senior Scottish players, and recently hosted the first round of the prestigious ETTU Cup (which is basically the UEFA Europa League of table tennis). On top of that they have a professional website and logo, host the North Ayrshire Open each year, and have managed to secure funding from Sport Scotland and the local council. Basically, they are doing everything right!

With so much going on at the club I thought it would be a great idea to get Chris on the show and find out a little more about his story and his plans for the future of the club, and Scottish table tennis in general. We talk about a whole range of different topics so there is something for everyone in this interview whether you are a player, a coach, or someone involved in running a club and promoting the sport of table tennis in your area.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • How Chris first got into table tennis.
  • What he did to improve so quickly as a relative late-starter.
  • Chris’s views on talent vs practice and what he looks for in a player.
  • Why it is so difficult to improve your table tennis as an adult.
  • How table tennis is organised differently in Belgium.
  • All about the ETTU Cup and how North Ayrshire got on.
  • How Chris manages to coach and play at the same time.
  • What Chris believes is most important for beginners to understand.
  • Chris’s top tip for table tennis players.
  • The future plans for the club.
